Where to go to study? We choose the most rating university Of Ukraine
There is very little left before the start of the admission campaign to Ukrainian universities. The main session of the UPE has already ended and the test results in almost all subjects have become known. For those who have not yet decided where to enter, we analyzed four ratings: two foreign and two Ukrainian.
Round University Ranking
This is an international ranking of 750 universities, reflecting their level in 20 unique indicators and 4 key areas of activity: teaching, research, international diversity, financial sustainability. All initial data for the ranking are provided by the international company Thomson Reuters. The rating has been published since 2013 by a rating agency based in Moscow.
The ranking includes 7 Ukrainian universities. Experts consider the KNU named after V.I. Shevchenko (560th place), Kharkiv University named after V.I. Karazin (593rd place). The rest of the universities are located in this order.
Sumy University - 603rd place;
Kiev Polytechnic - 636th place;
Kiev Economic University - 645th place;
Ostrog Academy - 650th place;
Kremenchug University Ostrogradsky - 655th place.
This ranking has been published annually since 2002. The developers take into account the ratio of the number of teachers and students, the relative number of foreign teachers and students, reputation in the academic environment, citation of scientific publications of university representatives, the attitude of employers to graduates.
Kiev National University. Taras Shevchenko confirmed his place in group 421-430. It is also in the 301-400 group in terms of teaching mathematics and 39th in the ranking of universities in developing countries in Europe and Central Asia (EECA).
Kharkiv National University Karazin has worsened its position in comparison with last year. He was in the 491-500 group, while last year he was in the 481-490 group. In the ranking of universities in developing countries of Europe and Central Asia, it is in 55th place.
"112 Ukraine"
It is based on the citation of scientific articles published by the educational institution or its employees. Universities are ranked according to the Hirsch index, a quantitative indicator based on the number of scientific publications and the number of their citations.
According to the rating, the highest Hirsch index among the universities of Ukraine has the Kiev National University. Shevchenko - 73 (72 in the previous ranking), Kharkiv National University. Karazin - 57 (52) and Lviv National University. Franko - 46, who moved from the third step to the Odessa National University. Mechnikov.
The fifth and sixth lines are occupied by the Chernivtsi National University. Fedkovich (44) and NTUU "Kiev Polytechnic Institute" (38).
Donetsk national medical University them. Gorky (37), Dnepropetrovsk National University. Gonchara (33) and NTU "Kharkov Polytechnic Institute" (33) took 7th, 8th and 9th places in the rating, respectively.
The 10th place is taken by the National University "Lviv Polytechnic" with 30 points.
It remains today the only IREG (Observatory of Academic Ranking and Excellence) accredited academic ranking in Ukraine, hallmark which is an attempt to compare universities of different types among themselves on the basis of applying a universal system of criteria to them.
This year, the leader of the rating was the Kiev Polytechnic Institute, which, with a significant gap from other universities in Ukraine, came out ahead in terms of " Innovative activity universities. "The second place in the ranking was taken by the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
The third and fourth places were taken by Kharkiv universities: National University. Karazin and National technical University "Kharkov Polytechnic Institute". The fifth place was taken by the National University "Lviv Polytechnic".

How much does it cost to study?
Each graduate counts on the fact that he will be able to enter the budget, but for all the places, of course, there will not be enough. Therefore, it will not be superfluous to familiarize yourself with the prices.
The most expensive specialties today are international economics and law. In KNU, a year of study on them costs 44 thousand UAH. At the Kharkiv University. Karazin, the prices for these specialties are much more democratic - 19,760 UAH.
At the Kiev University of Economics, international economic relations will cost UAH 10,000 per semester. At the Lviv University. Franko - from 17 208 to 18 thousand UAH per year - depending on the faculty. You can study law here for 20 thousand.
"Technicians" are now more lucky, at least their specialties are cheaper. For comparison, one of the most expensive is Engineering software - in KPI costs 17,700 UAH.
In Lviv Polytechnic, each course of this specialty costs differently: from 10 to 14 thousand. In general, in 4 years you will have to pay 49 thousand 200 UAH.
But at the Kharkov Polytechnic this specialty costs only 7 800 UAH per year.

In May 2016, DOU held about the universities in which IT specialists study or studied. Such surveys were conducted and, but this year we decided to make the assessment more complete and comprehensive.
As we thought
To build the rating, an assessment of the willingness to recommend your faculty or department as a place of study was chosen. We used this indicator because it is less dependent on the respondent's subjective life circumstances (for example, nostalgia for adolescence or displeasure with insufficient efforts during training). In addition, since the recommendation is made “for the future,” the respondent can take into account not only his personal learning experience, but also any information about the university received after graduation - thus we get a more objective assessment.
results
The lowest marks were received (5.7) and (4.7).
The rest of the universities received average marks - not higher and not lower than the average level in the sample.
Interestingly, general universities are leading in the ranking (with the exception of KNURE). While specialized technical universities, such as KPI, Lviv Polytechnic, ONPU, KhAI, KhPI, DonNTU received average marks, and VNTU and NAU even below average.
In addition to high-grade universities, there are several separate high-ranked faculties in secondary schools.
This is the Faculty of Applied Mathematics (score 7.3), as well as several faculties: Institute of Physics and Technology (PTI) - 7.4 points, Faculty of Applied Mathematics (FPM) - 7.3 points, Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IASA) - 7.0 points.
KPI, being the largest university for IT education (a quarter of the respondents are studying or studying at this university), received average marks. The main reason is the variance in the assessments of different faculties. In contrast to the aforementioned stronger faculties (FTI, FPM, IASA), the study also analyzed FIWT, TEF and FEL, which received average marks ().
To view data for all universities, use the widget below or a table with all the data. The complete dataset can be downloaded from GitHub.
In green highlighted values \u200b\u200babove the average for the entire sample, orange - below the average for the entire sample. The values \u200b\u200bin the cells without filling do not differ from the sample mean (significance level 90%).
Cells with numbers show the average grade on a scale from 1 to 10, with% the share of all respondents for a particular university / faculty.
Overall assessment: willingness to recommend a department / faculty Kudos to the faculty Organization of the educational process, the presence of bureaucracy, informing students Learning is difficult Database Good explanations, clear presentation of the material Technical condition of the premises Group / flow: level of knowledge, motivation Involvement and support of students in research activities Financial efficiency (attraction and distribution of funds) Faced bribes personally IT professionals acted as guest lecturers Quite active cooperation with IT companies in the field of employment Wouldn't change the place of study |

Ukrainian IT education: you can cheat and give bribes, but it is prestigious
Assessments of different learning parameters range from 5 to 6 on a 10-point scale, rarely exceeding 6 points. The prestige of the faculty was assessed as highly as possible - 6.5 on average across all universities.
The respondents speak of a rather loyal attitude towards cheating and plagiarism - this item received a score of 5.0 out of 10 (where 10 means "it is very difficult to write off or hand over someone else's work").
The level of corruption is also quite high: as we have already, 39% of the respondents have personally encountered cases of bribery.
The main problems of higher education for IT: weak alumni community, outdated knowledge and financial inefficiency
It is these parameters of the work of universities that were rated the least.
- community of alumni (assistance to the university, the presence of “common values”) - 4.0;
- relevance of the provided knowledge for work in IT - 4.1;
- financial efficiency of the university (optimality of attracting and allocating resources) - 4.2.
The irrelevance of knowledge is also reflected in the assessments of the work of teachers. If the clarity of explanations and presentation of the material were rated on average at 6.1, then the practical experience of application and the ability to explain how to apply knowledge in practice are rated worse - at 5.2.
Of the technologies listed in the questionnaire, databases (studied by 81% of respondents), C ++ (74%) and C (60%) are most often taught in universities. 44% of respondents studied Java at the university, JavaScript - 30%, QA - 15%.
A glimpse of hope: cooperation between universities and IT companies
Despite the low ratings of the relevance and usefulness of knowledge, cooperation between universities and IT companies gives hope for the best, in particular, the involvement of IT specialists in teaching and joint events with the aim of employing students.
37% of respondents noted that their faculty involved IT practitioners in teaching - although 30% think it should be done more often.
In addition to attracting IT professionals to teaching faculties cooperate with IT companies and other ways: 38% of respondents said that IT professionals were on their faculties as guest lecturers, 29% - that the IT companies are helping faculty with technical support.
32% of respondents believe that their university is quite actively cooperating with IT companies in the field of employment.
Details of this data on cooperation with IT companies by universities can be viewed.
Detailed analysis of individual universities
NaUKMA
In the survey, the university is mainly represented by the Faculty of Informatics.
Almost all the marks of NaUKMA turned out to be higher than the average for the sample: image, work of administration and teachers, usefulness and relevance of knowledge (including the list of studied technologies), technical support, student and alumni community, academic opportunity, financial performance, collaboration with IT companies, and employment assistance.
For NaUKMA, the lowest level of corruption was recorded - none of the respondents faced bribes personally.
57% of alumni and students of NaUKMA surveyed said that they would not change their place of study if they could choose again (vs 36% in the general sample).
KNU them. Shevchenko
In the survey, KNU is represented mainly by two faculties: the Faculty of Cybernetics and the Faculty of Radiophysics, Electronics and Computer Systems (formerly radiophysical).
Faculty of Cybernetics rated as more prestigious, providing more relevant and useful knowledge for working in IT (including a wider list of studied technologies), more often attracting IT professionals to teaching.
On the other hand, students and alumni Faculty of Radiophysics, Electronics and Computer Systems they assess the work of the administration (orientation towards the interests of students) higher, consider the curriculum more complex and interesting, assess the involvement of students in research activities higher, and also speak of a stricter attitude towards cheating and plagiarism. At the Faculty of Radiophysics, Electronics and Computer Systems, a rather low level of corruption is also noted - none of the respondents had encountered bribes at the faculty personally, compared to 8% at the Faculty of Cybernetics and 39% in the sample as a whole.
KNURE
KNURE, together with KNU and CSU, ranks second in the ranking of universities with an assessment of readiness to recommend a university as a place of study 7.3 out of 10.
At the same time, on Faculty of Computer Engineering and Management more high level involvement of students in research work - however, there is also a higher level of corruption, 66% of respondents faced bribes personally (compared to 41% at the Faculty of Computer Science and 39% in the sample as a whole).
ChGU im. Petra Mogila
CSU, together with KNU and KNURE, ranks second in the ranking of universities with an assessment of readiness to recommend a university as a place of study 7.2 out of 10.
In the survey, CSU is almost entirely represented by the Faculty of Computer Science.
The faculty scores above average on most metrics, including collaboration with IT companies, job placement assistance, and knowledge relevance.
In particular, the level of studying various technologies at the Faculty of Computer Science of ChSU is one of the highest among all universities and faculties, and the level of corruption at the faculty (5%) is one of the lowest and is second only to NaUKMA.
SSU
In the survey, SSU is almost completely represented by the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technologies.
In many respects, the university received grades above average, but the image of the university was assessed as average, and the complexity of education was below average. At the same time, the relevance of knowledge is assessed above average, possibly due to the involvement of IT specialists in teaching and cooperation with IT companies in the field of employment.
The work of the administration, the clarity of the presentation of the material by the teachers, and the technical support were well appreciated. Quite a high level of student involvement in scientific activity... The university also received high marks for financial efficiency - with a relatively low level of corruption (19% faced bribes personally, compared to 39% for the sample as a whole).
LNU them. Franco
In the survey, LNU is represented mainly by the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics.
The Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics has a high level of prestige and complexity of education, the faculty often attracts IT specialists to teach (for the university as a whole, these marks are average). Otherwise, the grades of both the university and the faculty differ little from the average for the sample
The level of corruption in the university is below average: 29% have encountered bribes personally (vs 39% for the sample as a whole).
DNU them. Potter
The university as a whole received average marks, but the Faculty of Applied Mathematics (about half of the respondents from DNU) received high marks of readiness to recommend it as a place of study (7.3 out of 10).
According to most indicators, the faculty is rated average, so the high level of readiness to recommend is caused, apparently, by the prestige of the faculty and the complexity of training.
At the same time, the technical support and financial efficiency of both the faculty and the university as a whole are rated below average.
Lviv Polytechnic
University grades are average. The work of the administration, namely focus on the interests of students, is assessed below - this is mainly the "fault" of the Institute of Computer Technologies, Automation and Metrology.
The Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology received higher marks - it is considered more prestigious, higher rates are given to technological opportunities for training, the involvement of IT specialists in teaching and cooperation with IT companies, including assistance in finding a job. At the Institute of Computer Technology, Automation and Metrology, all these points are rated at average or below average.
The level of corruption in these two faculties and in general in the Lviv Polytechnic is above average (57% of the respondents faced bribes personally versus 39% of the total sample).
ONPU
In the study, ONPU is represented mainly by the Institute of Computer Systems.
The grades of both the faculty and the university are mostly average. Everything related to technical support is assessed below: the condition of the premises, technological capabilities for training, access to training materials.
In addition, the financial efficiency of the university is assessed below average, but the level of corruption is higher (54% of respondents from this university have faced bribes personally, compared to 39% on average for the sample).
At the same time, respondents from ONPU talk about rather active cooperation with IT companies in the field of employment.
NTUU "KPI"
The assessments of KPI as a university are generally average, but the situation may differ at different departments. The strengths of KPI as a university in general are prestige, learning complexity and a strong student and alumni community. Among the minuses - the work of the administration and teachers, technical support and financial efficiency. The level of corruption in the university is below average.
There are three faculties of the KPI, which are highly rated: these are the Physico-Technical Institute (FTI), the Faculty of Applied Mathematics (FPM) and the Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IASA).
They were rated above average for their willingness to recommend, and in many respects these faculties are similar to each other: for example, they are rated as prestigious, difficult to learn and providing relevant and useful knowledge and professional contacts for working in IT. The level of corruption in these faculties is below average.
Moreover, respondents with FTI more often they consider studying to be interesting and give a higher rating to the work of the administration, namely, the orientation towards the interests of students.
If we talk about teachers, then respondents with IASA higher assess the quality of explanations and presentation of material, and respondents with FTI - practical experience and the ability to explain the application of knowledge in practice. Moreover, on FTI higher level of student involvement in research activities.
On FTI and IASA also a stricter attitude towards cheating and plagiarism, better access to educational materials, higher ratings from the alumni community, these faculties are more likely to involve IT specialists in teaching (for FPM the scores for all these items do not differ from the average).
At the same time, estimates of employment assistance for all three faculties are practically the same and do not differ from the sample average.
In addition to these three faculties, the study also distinguished the Faculty of Informatics and computing technology (FIVT), Faculty of Heat and Power (TEF) and the Faculty of Electronics (FEL).
Have FIWT good grades of image and learning complexity. The level of corruption at the FIWT is below average (27% vs 39% on average for the sample), the faculty actively cooperates with IT companies in the field of employment. However, the relevance of knowledge is assessed below average, as well as the work of the administration, the work of teachers, attitudes towards cheating and plagiarism, technical support and financial efficiency.
Have TEF and FEL low ratings of the image and organization of the educational process (including bureaucracy), as well as technical support. FEL students also rate below average the relevance and usefulness of the acquired knowledge for work in IT, they are less likely to involve IT specialists in teaching and work less with IT companies in the field of employment. At the TEF, this is a little better: the grades are average, and the list of studied technologies is wider, but the level of student involvement in scientific and technical activities is lower and the level of corruption is higher.
KhNU them. Karazin
Most of the university's assessments do not differ from the sample average. The alumni community and the level of involvement in research activities were rated above average. Also, the university has a more strict attitude towards cheating and plagiarism.
NTU "KhPI"
Most of the university's assessments do not differ from the sample average. The work of the administration was assessed above average, namely, the orientation towards the interests of students. Also, according to the respondents, both the university and one of its most popular IT departments - KIT (Computer and Information Technologies) - actively cooperate with IT companies in the field of employment.
However, the respondents give a low rating to the complexity of education at the university and the technical condition of its premises.
KhAI them. Zhukovsky
In many respects, the university is rated average. At the same time, respondents from the KhAI more often answer that it is interesting to study here - perhaps this is due to high marks for the work of teachers, technical support (including access to educational materials) and the alumni community.
The financial efficiency of the university is assessed above average - but the level of corruption in the university is also higher (55% have personally encountered bribes vs 39% in the sample as a whole).
DonNTU
In the survey, the university is mainly represented by the Faculty of Computer Science and Technology.
Respondents from DonNTU assess the training program as difficult, and consider the acquired knowledge useful for working in IT. Also, the clarity of explanations and presentation of the material by teachers was rated above average.
At the same time, according to the respondents, the university does little to cooperate with IT companies in the field of employment. Below average assessed the technical condition of the premises of the university, the involvement of students in research activities, as well as the financial performance of the university - along with that, the level of corruption in DonNTU above average (54% personally encountered bribery vs 39% in the total sample).
VNTU
In the survey, VNTU is represented mainly by the Faculty of Information Technology and Computer Engineering.
The university and faculty are among the outsiders in the ranking: the readiness to recommend them as a place of study is below average. Almost all assessment parameters were assessed below average: the image of the university, the organization of the educational process, the usefulness and relevance of knowledge, the complexity and interest of education, the work of teachers, the technical condition and financial efficiency.
The level of corruption in VNTU is above average: 75% of respondents from this university have personally encountered bribes upon admission or during their studies (vs 39% in the sample as a whole).
NAU
In the survey, NAU is represented mainly by the Institute of Computer Information Technologies. The university ranks last in the level of readiness to recommend.
As in the case of VNTU, most of the assessment parameters were assessed below average: the image of the university, the work of the administration, the complexity and interest of learning, the relevance and usefulness of knowledge, the work of teachers, technical support, the community of students and alumni, financial efficiency. The level of corruption in NAU is above average: 58% of the respondents have personally encountered bribes (vs 39% in the sample as a whole).
In addition, according to the respondents, NAU does not actively cooperate with IT companies, including in the field of employment, rarely engages practitioners from the IT industry in teaching.
Only 18% of respondents from NAU would not change their place of study if they had such an opportunity - this is the lowest value among all universities, and two times lower than the average value for the sample (36%).
