An excerpt characterizing Elyutin, Vyacheslav Petrovich

- Sonya, you can't doubt him, you can't, you can't, do you understand? She shouted.
- Does he love you?
- Does she love? Natasha repeated with a smile of regret for her friend's incomprehensibility. - You read the letter, did you see it?
- But if he is an ignoble person?
"He! ... an ignoble man?" If you only knew! - Natasha said.
- If he is a noble person, then he must either announce his intention, or stop seeing you; and if you don’t want to do it, then I’ll do it, I’ll write to him, I’ll tell dad, ”Sonya said resolutely.
- Yes, I can not live without him! Cried Natasha.
- Natasha, I don't understand you. And what are you saying! Remember your father, about Nicolas.
- I don't need anyone, I don't love anyone but him. How dare you say that he is ignoble? Don't you know that I love him? Natasha shouted. “Sonia, go away, I don’t want to quarrel with you, go away, for God's sake, go away: you see how I suffer,” Natasha shouted angrily in a restrained irritated and desperate voice. Sonya burst into tears and ran out of the room.
Natasha went to the table and, without thinking for a minute, wrote the answer to Princess Marya, which she could not write the whole morning. In this letter, she briefly wrote to Princess Marya that all their misunderstandings were over, that, taking advantage of the generosity of Prince Andrei, who gave her freedom when leaving, she asks her to forget everything and forgive her if she is guilty before her, but that she cannot be his wife ... All this seemed to her so easy, simple and clear at that moment.

On Friday the Rostovs were supposed to go to the village, and on Wednesday the count went with the buyer to his Moscow region.
On the day of the count's departure, Sonya and Natasha were invited to a big dinner at the Karagin's, and Marya Dmitrievna took them. At this dinner Natasha met Anatole again, and Sonya noticed that Natasha was saying something to him, wishing not to be heard, and during the dinner she was even more agitated than before. When they returned home, Natasha began the first with Sonya the explanation that her friend had been waiting for.
- Here you, Sonya, said various nonsense about him, - Natasha began in a meek voice, the voice that children say when they want to be praised. - We have explained to him today.
- Well, what, what? Well, what did he say? Natasha, how glad I am that you are not angry with me. Tell me everything, the whole truth. What did he say?
Natasha pondered.
- Oh Sonya, if you knew him as I do! He said ... He asked me how I had promised Bolkonsky. He was glad that it was up to me to refuse him.
Sonya sighed sadly.
“But you didn't refuse Bolkonsky,” she said.
- Or maybe I refused! Maybe it's all over with Bolkonsky. Why do you think so badly of me?
- I don't think anything, I just don't understand it ...
- Wait, Sonya, you will understand everything. You will see what kind of person he is. Do not think badly about me or about him.
- I do not think bad about anyone: I love everyone and feel sorry for everyone. But what should I do?
Sonya did not give up on the gentle tone with which Natasha addressed her. The softer and more searching was Natasha's expression, the more serious and stern Sonya's face was.
“Natasha,” she said, “you asked me not to speak to you, I didn’t speak, now you yourself started. Natasha, I don't believe him. Why is this secret?
- Again, again! Natasha interrupted.
- Natasha, I'm afraid for you.
- Why be afraid?
“I’m afraid that you will ruin yourself,” said Sonya resolutely, herself frightened by what she said.
Natasha's face again expressed anger.
- And I will ruin, I will ruin, I will ruin myself as soon as possible. None of your business. Not you, but I will feel bad. Leave, leave me. I hate you.
- Natasha! - Sonya cried out in fright.
- I hate, I hate! And you are my enemy forever!
Natasha ran out of the room.
Natasha did not speak to Sonya anymore and avoided her. With the same expression of agitated surprise and criminality, she walked from room to room, taking now and then for another occupation and immediately abandoning them.
No matter how hard it was for Sonya, she, without taking her eyes off, watched her friend.
On the eve of the day on which the count was supposed to return, Sonya noticed that Natasha had been sitting all morning at the drawing-room window, as if expecting something, and that she had made some sign to the passing soldier whom Sonya took for Anatole.
Sonya began to observe her friend even more attentively and noticed that Natasha was in a strange and unnatural state all the time of dinner and in the evening (she answered inappropriately to questions made to her, began and did not finish phrases, laughed at everything).
After tea Sonya saw a timid maid girl who was waiting for her at Natasha's door. She let her in and, overhearing at the door, learned that a letter had been transmitted again. And suddenly it became clear to Sonya that Natasha had some kind of terrible plan for this evening. Sonya knocked on her door. Natasha did not let her in.
“She will run away with him! thought Sonya. She is capable of anything. There was something especially pitiful and resolute in her face today. She began to cry, saying goodbye to her uncle, Sonya recalled. Yes it is true, she runs with him - but what should I do? " thought Sonya, recalling now those signs which clearly proved why Natasha had some terrible intention. “There is no graph. What should I do, write to Kuragin, demanding an explanation from him? But who tells him to answer? Write to Pierre, as Prince Andrei asked in case of misfortune? ... But maybe, in fact, she already refused Bolkonsky (she sent a letter to Princess Marya yesterday). There is no uncle! " To tell Marya Dmitrievna, who believed in Natasha so much, seemed awful to Sonya. “But one way or another, Sonia thought, standing in the dark corridor: now or never is the time to prove that I remember the good deeds of their family and love Nicolas. No, I won't sleep for at least three nights, but I won't leave this corridor and I won't let her in by force, and I won't let the shame fall on their family, ”she thought.

Anatole recent times moved to Dolokhov. The plan to kidnap Rostova had already been thought out and prepared by Dolokhov for several days, and on the day when Sonya, having overheard Natasha at the door, decided to protect her, this plan had to be carried out. At ten o'clock in the evening Natasha promised to go out to Kuragin's back porch. Kuragin had to put her in a prepared troika and take her 60 versts from Moscow to the village of Kamenka, where a cropped priest was prepared, who was to marry them. In Kamenka, a setup was ready, which was supposed to take them out to the Warsaw road, and there they had to gallop abroad by post.

An excerpt characterizing Elyutin, Vyacheslav Petrovich

To be honest, I didn't have too much mood to walk, because after everything that happened, my condition was, let's say, very, very “satisfactory ... But I couldn't leave Stella alone either, so that both were good though if only “in the middle”, we decided not to go far, but just to relax a little our brains that are almost boiling, and to give rest to our pain-ridden hearts, enjoying the peace and quiet of the mental floor ...
We sailed slowly in a gentle silvery haze, completely relaxing our twitching nervous system, and plunging into a stunning, incomparable local peace ... When suddenly Stella shouted enthusiastically:
- Wow! Just look what kind of beauty it is there! ..
I looked around and immediately understood what she was talking about ...
It really was extraordinarily beautiful! .. As if someone, playing, created a real sky-blue "crystal" kingdom! .. We looked in amazement at incredibly huge, delicate ice flowers, powdered with light blue snowflakes; and the bridges of sparkling ice trees, flashing blue glare at the slightest movement of the "crystal" foliage and reaching the height of our three-story house ... shining with iridescence of unprecedented silvery blue shades ...
What was it?! Who liked this cold color so much? ..
So far, for some reason, no one showed up anywhere, and no one expressed a great desire to meet us ... It was a little strange, since usually the owners of all these wonderful worlds were very hospitable and friendly, with the exception of only those who had just appeared on " floor ”(that is, they had just died) and were not yet ready to communicate with others, or simply preferred to experience something purely personal and difficult alone.
- Who do you think lives in this strange world? .. - for some reason Stella asked in a whisper.
- Do you want - we'll see? - unexpectedly for myself, I suggested.
I did not understand where all my fatigue had gone, and why I suddenly completely forgot the promise I made to myself a minute ago not to interfere in any, even the most incredible, incidents until tomorrow, or at least until I had a little rest. But, of course, this again triggered my insatiable curiosity, which I had not yet learned to pacify, even when there was a real need for it ...
Therefore, trying, as far as my exhausted heart allowed, to “disconnect” and not think about our failed, sad and difficult day, I immediately plunged into “new and unknown”, anticipating some unusual and exciting adventure ...
We smoothly "slowed down" right at the very entrance to the stunning "ice" world, when suddenly a man appeared from behind a blue tree sparkling with sparks ... She was a very unusual girl - tall and slender, and very beautiful, she would have seemed quite young , almost if not for the eyes ... They shone with calm, light sadness, and were deep, like a well with the purest spring water ... And in these wondrous eyes there was such wisdom, which Stella and I had not been given to comprehend for a long time ... Not at all surprised at our appearance, the stranger smiled warmly and quietly asked:
- What are you guys?
- We just passed by and wanted to see your beauty. I'm sorry if you disturbed me ... - I muttered a little embarrassed.
- Well, what are you! Come inside, it will surely be more interesting ... - waving her hand into the depths, the stranger smiled again.
We instantly slipped past her inside the "palace", unable to hold back the curiosity rushing out, and already anticipating in advance for sure something very, very "interesting".
It turned out to be so overwhelming inside that Stella and I literally froze in a stupor, opening our mouths like starving one-day-old chicks, unable to utter a word ...
There was no, as they say, "floor" in the palace ... Everything that was there hovered in the sparkling silvery air, creating the impression of a sparkling infinity. Some fantastic "seats", similar to groups of sparkling dense clouds that had accumulated in small heaps, were hanging smoothly in the air, sometimes thickening, then almost disappearing, as if attracting attention and inviting them to sit down ... shining and shimmering, they decorated everything around, striking with a variety of shapes and patterns of the thinnest, almost jewelry petals. And somewhere very high in the “ceiling”, blinding with sky-blue light, huge ice “icicles” of incredible beauty hung, turning this fabulous “cave” into a fantastic “ice world”, which seemed to have no end ...
- Come on, my guests, grandfather will be incredibly glad to see you! - Smoothly gliding past us, the girl said warmly.
And then I finally understood why she seemed to us unusual - as the stranger moved, the sparkling "tail" of some special blue matter was constantly behind her, which shone and curled like tornadoes around her fragile figure, scattering behind her silvery pollen ...
We did not have time to be surprised at this, when we immediately saw a very tall, gray-haired old man, proudly sitting on a strange, very beautiful chair, as if emphasizing by this his significance for those who do not understand. He quite calmly watched our approach, not at all surprised and not yet expressing any emotions, except for a warm, friendly smile.
The old man's white, shimmering silver, flowing clothes merged with the same, completely white, long hair, making him look like a good spirit. And only the eyes, as mysterious as those of our beautiful stranger, shook with boundless patience, wisdom and depth, forcing us to cringe from the infinity shining through them ...
