Exam structure

Speaking is considered the most difficult part by many candidates, although, at the same time, it is the shortest: only 15 minutes. The candidates are formed into pairs who must complete certain tasks. The candidates are assessed by two examiners: one asks questions, the second gives points.

How is the test evaluated?

Each part of the test is assessed separately and brings 20% of the points to the final result. Even if you poorly pass one part of the test, you still have every chance of getting a pass mark on the results of the rest of the exam. If you get 60-74% - you get a C (pass) grade, 75-79% - B grade, more than 80% - A grade.

Where to take CAE?

In 2008, the British Council in Russia ceased administration. However, many language schools have received the right to administer these tests, so you should have no difficulty finding a test center for taking Cambridge exams.

CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) is an internationally recognized Cambridge exam in English. It was developed by ESOL (a division of English for Speakers of Other Language) of the University of Cambridge. It appeared in 1991.

The CAE exam is an intermediate link between the other two Cambridge exams FCE and CPE. It corresponds to level C1 on the international scale of language levels of the Council of Europe. The CAE certificate has no expiration date.

Test structure and CAE score

The exam consists of the following parts:

Where to check in and how much does it cost

Until 2007, the exam could be taken at the British Council. However, now the British Council does not accept exams, this function has been transferred to language centers.

In Moscow, the CAE exam is taken by Education First Moscow, Language Link, BKC-IH, Center for Language Studies. Accepted by CAE in Moscow and others educational organizationsbut they only work with their own students.

The starting level of language proficiency required to prepare for the exam is not lower than B2 (upper intermediate).

To determine the level, you must pass testing. Testing is carried out strictly by appointment () and consists of a lexical and grammatical test (duration 50 minutes) and conversation (duration 10 minutes). We will report the results within 1-2 business days.

Exam structure and procedure for passing CAE

Reading and grammar (90 minutes, 40% of the total grade)

Reading contains 8 blocks of tasks. The maximum score for the section is 78, the number of questions is 56. The examinee is required to understand and deeply analyze diverse texts, dialogues, statements. In some tasks, you need to correctly use vocabulary and grammatical structures, to understand the features of the language.

Letter (90 minutes, 20% of total grade)

The part includes two tasks. You need to write two texts, 220-260 words each. The first is always an essay on a specific topic. The second can be a note, letter, or review. In addition to literacy, presentation style, the presence of complex structures, advanced vocabulary, clarity and brevity are very important.

Listening (40 minutes, 20% of the total score)

This block contains 4 sections of tasks, there are 30 of them in total. Two of them are based on listening to dialogues, and two more - on monologues. For each part of listening 4-10 questions. For a successful passage, you need to understand the meaning of conversations, listen to the details, quickly highlight important facts.

Speaking (15 minutes, 20% of total grade)

The stage consists of 4 parts:

Exam structure

The CAE exam consists of four parts:

CAE test results

The maximum possible result for Cambridge English: Advanced is 210 points, which corresponds to the level of the Proficient user on the European CEFR scale. Your final score is calculated from the total score for each of the four parts of the test.

Reading and grammar give 40% of the total test result, the rest of the parts - 20% each. The results can be found on the official Cambridge English Results website.
