CAE is an acronym for Certificate in advanced English. CAE - exam University of Cambridge, for candidates who are studying English as a foreign language. It was first introduced in 1991, but the structure of the exam has changed somewhat since then. Like the others we wrote about earlier, the CAE certificate is perpetual. The exam corresponds to the Advanced or C1 level of the Council of Europe scale.
Who is taking the exam?

Exam structure
The exam includes 5 parts and is aimed at testing all the language skills of the candidate:
- Reading - reading (4 tasks, 1 hour 15 minutes is given to complete)
- Writing - writing (2 tasks, 30 minutes to complete)
- Use of English - language use (5 tasks, 1 hour to complete)
- Listening - listening (4 tasks, 40 min.)
- Speaking - speaking
Speaking is considered the most difficult part by many candidates, although, at the same time, it is the shortest: only 15 minutes. The candidates are formed into pairs who must complete certain tasks. The candidates are assessed by two examiners: one asks questions, the second gives points.
Preparing for the exam, you need to improve all language skills, pay attention to weaknesses.
How is the test evaluated?
Each part of the test is assessed separately and brings 20% of the points to the final result. Even if you poorly pass one part of the test, you still have every chance of getting a pass mark on the results of the rest of the exam. If you get 60-74% - you get a C (pass) grade, 75-79% - B grade, more than 80% - A grade.Where to take CAE?

CAE (Certificate in Advanced English) is an internationally recognized Cambridge exam in English. It was developed by ESOL (a division of English for Speakers of Other Language) of the University of Cambridge. It appeared in 1991.
The CAE exam is an intermediate link between the other two Cambridge exams FCE and CPE. It corresponds to level C1 on the international scale of language levels of the Council of Europe. In practice, this means "proficiency in the language at a professional level, close to the level of a native speaker." Above the C1 level is only the C2 level - language proficiency at the native speaker level.
The results of this exam are recognized by many educational institutions and employing organizations around the world, it is accepted as proof of language proficiency when applying for a visa to the UK and Australia.
If the exam results do not suit you, you can retake the exam as often as you like (but not more than once a month).
The CAE certificate has no expiration date.
Test structure and CAE score
The exam consists of the following parts:

Each part is assessed separately, but they all account for 20% of the total grade. Even if you fail one of the parts, you can pass the exam. The certificate is issued if the candidate scored more than 60%. 60-74% - grade C, 75-79% - B, above 80% - A.

Where to check in and how much does it cost
Until 2007, the exam could be taken at the British Council. However, now the British Council does not accept exams, this function has been transferred to language centers.
In Moscow, the CAE exam is taken by Education First Moscow, Language Link, BKC-IH, Center for Language Studies. Accepted by CAE in Moscow and others educational organizationsbut they only work with their own students.
In Moscow, the exam can be taken about once a month. The cost of the exam in the summer of 2013 was about 7,800 rubles.

The starting level of language proficiency required to prepare for the exam is not lower than B2 (upper intermediate).
To determine the level, you must pass testing. Testing is carried out strictly by appointment () and consists of a lexical and grammatical test (duration 50 minutes) and conversation (duration 10 minutes). We will report the results within 1-2 business days.
If your level according to the results of the entrance test is slightly lower than B2, you can sign up for in English (upper intermediate 1 or 2 stage -), raise the level to the required level, and then, without re-testing, enter the exam preparation course.

Exam structure and procedure for passing CAE
Many language schools in Moscow provide preparation for CAE. Testing takes place in accredited centers. Testing consists of 5 parts. Use Of English is added to traditional Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. The examinee is required to have knowledge of advanced vocabulary, terminology, use of complex structures and knowledge of grammar.
Reading and grammar (90 minutes, 40% of the total grade)
Reading contains 8 blocks of tasks. The maximum score for the section is 78, the number of questions is 56. The examinee is required to understand and deeply analyze diverse texts, dialogues, statements. In some tasks, you need to correctly use vocabulary and grammatical structures, to understand the features of the language.
Letter (90 minutes, 20% of total grade)
The part includes two tasks. You need to write two texts, 220-260 words each. The first is always an essay on a specific topic. The second can be a note, letter, or review. In addition to literacy, presentation style, the presence of complex structures, advanced vocabulary, clarity and brevity are very important.
Listening (40 minutes, 20% of the total score)
This block contains 4 sections of tasks, there are 30 of them in total. Two of them are based on listening to dialogues, and two more - on monologues. For each part of listening 4-10 questions. For a successful passage, you need to understand the meaning of conversations, listen to the details, quickly highlight important facts.
Speaking (15 minutes, 20% of total grade)
The stage consists of 4 parts:
- Interview - 2 minutes.
- Joint task - 4 minutes.
- Task card - 4 minutes.
- Discussion - 5 minutes.
Speaking assesses not only the ability to conduct a conversation and express grammatically correct. The examinee is expected to use various complicating constructions, use a synonym, and complex terminology.
Certificate and cost
The cost of passing the test is 10,300 rubles. The certificate is issued when 60% of tasks are completed correctly. There are three ratings in total:
- Grade A - 80% or more.
- Grade B - 75-79%.
- C grade - 60-74%.

Exam structure
The CAE exam consists of four parts:

The Speaking section tests your communication skills in everyday situations. During the assignments of the sections, all candidates are divided into groups of 2-3 people and answer questions. All candidates are assessed independently of each other.
There are two experts on the oral part of the CAE: one asks questions, and the other listens to your answers and evaluates them according to several criteria: grammar, vocabulary, art of discourse, pronunciation and interactivity.

CAE test results
The maximum possible result for Cambridge English: Advanced is 210 points, which corresponds to the level of the Proficient user on the European CEFR scale. Your final score is calculated from the total score for each of the four parts of the test.

193-199 points - grade B, level C1.

Reading and grammar give 40% of the total test result, the rest of the parts - 20% each. The results can be found on the official Cambridge English Results website.
