OUR HEROES. Almost every citizen of the USSR knew the name of Yuri Babansky in the 60s and 80s. He is one of the surviving border guards who stood to death on Damansky Island. By that time, a Chinese infantry regiment and our motorized rifle division had deployed in the border area, artillery and mortars fired from both sides. Thus, regular units of the Chinese army entered the battles on Damanskoye, and from our side tanks and armored vehicles of the reserve of the border district and the Soviet army went on the attack. In these battles, the head of the border detachment, Colonel Leonov, was killed, and the secret rocket launchers of the Grad volley fire struck at enemy positions. The Chinese retreated and no longer attempted an attack. Junior Sergeant Yuri Babansky during this period went on reconnaissance to the island more than ten times. His group carried out the bodies of the dead border guards of the Strelnikov group and Colonel Leonov.
