But believe me, even if you know the reason for this or that phenomenon, it will not become less impressive from this - just look at the photos that we have found for you. Their authors managed to catch fireball, pillars of fire, rainbow clouds, a mirage, and even such an eerie phenomenon as a smoke whirlwind through the lens.

Gloria

An optical phenomenon in the clouds called "gloria" is Latin for "decoration". And gloria fully justifies its name. Its iridescent rings arise from the diffraction of light previously reflected in the cloud droplets so that it returns from the cloud in the same direction in which it fell.

You can observe this phenomenon on the clouds opposite the light source, while you must be in the air, on a mountain or, as in the photo, on high bridge, and the light source (sun or moon) should be behind your back.

Fireball

Unlike most other natural phenomena, the unambiguous reason for the appearance of ball lightning has not yet been found. According to the most popular belief, it is a phenomenon of electrical origin, a special type of lightning in the shape of a ball that appears in stormy weather and moves along an unpredictable trajectory.

Some scientists consider ball lightning to be a manifestation of phosphenes (visual sensations that occur without exposure of the eye to light) - in other words, a hallucination, while others completely deny its existence. Nevertheless, one cannot ignore the numerous eyewitness accounts who have encountered this rare phenomenon, photographed it or even filmed it - this can hardly be done with a hallucination.

Halo

A halo is a luminous ring around a light source - the sun, moon, or even street lights. This phenomenon is caused by ice crystals in cirrus clouds at an altitude of 5-10 km. The light reflected from these crystals is decomposed into a spectrum, which gives the halo an iridescent appearance. There are many types of halos in the form of circles and arcs - you may have observed one yourself in clear frosty weather.

Rainbow clouds

You can observe this beauty if the sun is hiding behind dense clouds, and there is another, less dense cloud nearby, for example, Altocumulus or Cirrus. At a certain position of the sun, this cloud can turn into rainbow colors due to the fact that rays of light of different wavelengths are deflected in a special way, and as a result, the light of these waves comes to the observer from different directions. Usually the colors are pastel, but sometimes they can be very bright.

Mirage

Mirage is the refraction of light streams at the border between layers of air that are sharply different in density and temperature. With this optical phenomenon, a person can observe not only a really visible distant object, but also its reflection in the atmosphere.

There are several types of mirages, for example the lower one, which you can see in the photo above. It looks like a shiny surface of water in the desert, although in reality it is just a reflection of the sky above an overheated sandy surface.

Upper mirages are more common in the polar regions, where there are large flat ice floes. Perhaps it was thanks to this effect that the inhabitants of Iceland learned about the existence of Greenland.

Fata Morgana

And this is rare optical phenomenon consists of several forms of mirages at once. At the same time, distant objects are repeated many times and with various distortions - approximately as in this photo from Australia. It is because of its unusual nature that the phenomenon got its name - in honor of the sea fairy Morgana, who, according to legend, lives on the seabed and sends ghostly visions to travelers.

But in fact, there is nothing mystical here: fata morgana occurs in cases when, due to the temperature difference in the lower layers of the atmosphere, several alternating layers of air of different densities are formed, capable of giving mirror reflections.

The New Earth Effect

Another kind of mirage, which should be discussed separately. It is observed in polar latitudes (both in the Arctic and in the Antarctic), and its essence lies in the fact that it creates the illusion of a sunrise before it actually occurs. Depending on the conditions, the sun in this phenomenon looks like a line or a quadrangle.

The reason for the New Earth effect is the reflection and bending of the sun's rays in the layers of the atmosphere, which makes the sun appear to be higher than it really is. As you might guess, the phenomenon got its name because it was first observed on Novaya Zemlya. This happened during the Barents expedition on January 24, 1597, when its participants saw the sun 2 weeks before the end of the polar night.

Smoke vortex

In July 2017, UK residents were startled by a huge black ring in the sky over the M62 in West Yorkshire. Similar rings were previously seen in California, Kazakhstan and some other places. Someone considers them a kind of UFO or even a "portal to another world."

But scientists have another explanation: These eerie black rings are swirls formed by smoke. For example, on that day, military reconstruction was taking place in Yorkshire, and the black ring was most likely formed due to a cannon salvo.
