On October 5, at a press conference, the names of the finalists of the "Enlightener" -2016 award for the best popular science book in Russian were announced. The shortlist, which included 8 books (4 - in the Natural Sciences nomination, 4 - in the Humanities nomination), was announced by the chairman of the jury, Roman Timenchik, and member of the jury, Yevgeny Bunimovich.

Finalists in the Natural Sciences nomination were:

Vladimir Dinets “Songs of Dragons. Love and adventure in the world of crocodiles and other dinosaur relatives " (Moscow: AST: Corpus, 2015)

Boris Zhukov "Introduction to Behavior" (Moscow: AST: Corpus, 2016)

Moses Kaganov "Physics through the eyes of a physicist"In 2 parts. (Moscow: MTsNMO, 2014)

Alexander Panchin "The sum of biotechnology" (Moscow: AST: Corpus, 2015)

The finalists in the Humanities category were:

Alexander Auzan “The economy of everything. How Institutions Define Our Lives " (Moscow: Mann, Ivanov and Ferber, 2014)

Kirill Babaev, Alexandra Arkhangelskaya "What is Africa" (Moscow: Ripol Classic, 2015)

Sergey Kavtaradze “Anatomy of architecture. Seven books on logic, form and meaning "(M .: Publishing House HSE, 2016)

Natalia Lebina “Man and Woman: Body, Fashion, Culture. USSR - Thaw "(Moscow: New Literary Review, 2014)

Book “The appearance of a hero. From the history of Russian emotional culture of the late 18th - early 19th centuries " withdrawn from the competition due to the decision of the jury to award a special prize to Andrey Zorin "Enlightener of Enlighteners".

Roman Tymenchik, jury chairman: “The list of finalists has one big negative property - it is short. The jury members had to make an effort on themselves and look for microscopic flaws. It is also important to take into account that we evaluated not only the manuscripts, but also the book itself, which will not only be read, but also taken in hand and considered. Sometimes we lowered the grade due to the quality of the publication, and sometimes vice versa. But in general, I want to note that this year the books with a long list are no worse than a short one. I think this year is very fruitful for humanitarian list... God grant that it will always be so ”.

Evgeny Bunimovich, member of the jury: "First of all, for the first time in the history of the Enlightener Prize, I have enjoyed the fact that most of the books are well-published. In the past, it often happened that an interesting text was not published at all. Secondly, this year the lists of books in both nominations were very even. Thirdly, earlier the natural science list was much stronger than the humanitarian one. And this season, in my opinion, the humanitarian list was in no way inferior and was even more convincing in its diversity. And the last thing: there are books that are too scientific, and vice versa, too popular. But this year the scientists tried to be a little more popular, and vice versa, the authors who came from journalism provided intelligible scientific research. "

Dmitry Zimin, founder of the award: “I always have a feeling of celebration in my soul when the Enlightener Prize announces the best books, and, at the same time, the bitterness that many good books are left behind the short list. I would like to acknowledge the book by Natalia Zazulina "Mission of the Grand Duke". This book can be read with great pleasure from any page and anywhere. I was also very much a fan of Alexander Etkind's book The World Could Be Different: William Bullitt in Efforts to Change the 20th Century. Unfortunately, she was not shortlisted. I highly recommend reading all the books of the long list, especially since the award site has them all. Read, rejoice and enjoy good literature. Happiness to all of us! "

According to the rules of the award, each finalist will be rewarded with a cash prize of 100 thousand rubles, and will take part in a lecture tour around the cities of Russia. Laureates will be announced November 16 at the award ceremony at the Central House of Writers. The award of the laureates will be 700 thousand rubles.

Ahead of the awards ceremony from 10 to 13 November will take place Festival Prize "Enlightener"- an intellectual holiday for all lovers of science, popular science literature and just curious people, consisting of a series of discussions, lectures and film screenings. Finalists, laureates and jury members of the Enlightener Prize of different years, as well as experts in mathematics, history, biology, chemistry, linguistics, economics and philosophy will be the lecturers of the festival. The full program of lectures and meetings will be announced later.

Dmitry Zimin's Enlightener Prize for the best popular science book in Russian was established in 2008. The purpose of the award is to attract the attention of readers to the educational genre, to encourage authors and create preconditions for expanding the market of educational literature in Russia.

Recall that the best educational books of 2016 will be selected by a jury, which includes: Roman Timenchik, chairman of the jury, literary critic, professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem; Dmitry Bayuk, historian of science, deputy editor-in-chief of the journal "Questions of the history of natural science and technology"; Evgeny Bunimovich, poet, mathematician; Vladimir Plungyan, linguist, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Deputy Director of the V.V. Vinogradov RAS, professor at Moscow State University M.V. Lomonosov; Konstantin Severinov, biologist, professor at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, professor at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, professor at Rutgers University (USA); Alexey Yurchak, anthropologist, professor at the University of California at Berkeley (USA); editors-compilers of the book "The Mathematical Component" Nikolai Andreev, Sergey Konovalov, Nikita Panyunin (representative at the jury meetings - Sergey Konovalov), as well as the founder of the award Dmitry Zimin.

Roman Tymenchik noted that the decisive feature of a short list is that it is short, so the jury members had to look for little things and exclude someone. He also stated that this year the books of the long list that were not included in the short list are no worse than those in the final.

So, books in several nominations at once claim to win.

Humanitarian sciences:

Auzan Alexander "The Economy of Everything. How Institutions Determine Our Life" (Moscow: Mann, Ivanov and Ferber, 2014)

Babaev Kirill, Arkhangelskaya Alexandra "What is Africa" \u200b\u200b(Moscow: Ripol Classic, 2015)

Sergey Kavtaradze "Anatomy of architecture. Seven books on logic, form and meaning" (Moscow: HSE Publishing House, 2016)

Lebina Natalia "Man and Woman: body, fashion, culture. USSR - Thaw" (Moscow: New Literary Review, 2014)

Alexander Gavrilov noted that the jury also noted "the feat of the relatives of Auzan who forced to utter the book", since he himself did not write it, and his children recorded it on a dictaphone.

Natural Sciences:

Dinets Vladimir "Songs of Dragons. Love and Adventures in the World of Crocodiles and Other Dinosaur Relatives" (Moscow: AST: Corpus, 2015)

Zhukov Boris "Introduction to Behavior" (Moscow: AST: Corpus, the book will be published in June 2016)

Kaganov Moisey "Physics through the eyes of a physicist". In 2 parts. (Moscow: MTsNMO, 2014)

Panchin Alexander "The Sum of Biotechnologies" (Moscow: AST: Corpus, 2015)

Also this season will be awarded a special prize "Enlightener of Enlighteners". And Andrey Zorin will get it - "The Appearance of a Hero. From the History of Russian Emotional Culture of the Late 18th - Early 19th Centuries" (Moscow: New Literary Review, 2016).

Prize winners in the Humanities and Natural and Exact Sciences nominations will receive a cash reward of 700 thousand rubles, the finalists will receive 100 thousand rubles each. The publishers of the laureates' books will be awarded a cash certificate worth 130 thousand rubles to promote books on the market.

On November 16, 2016 at the Writers' Club of the Central House of Writers, the ninth ceremony of presenting the Dmitry Zimin "Enlightener" prize for the best popular science book in Russian took place.

The hosts of the ceremony were Tutta Larsen and Mikhail Zygar... Laureate in the nomination "Natural and Exact Sciences"announced by the jury member Evgeny Bunimovich... The award went to Alexander Panchin per book "The sum of biotechnology".

Evgeny Bunimovich: “We know well the famous phrase that any mathematical formula cuts the number of readers in half. Therefore, it is very difficult for those who write books on natural science topics. This year the choice in this nomination was very difficult. On the one hand, it is difficult for the jury when there is no obvious leader, and on the other hand, it is interesting to sit and discuss, since not only all the advantages of the book appear at once, but also more global topics, for example, what is enlightenment in general? Everything influences the choice of the jury. Today's time also influences. "

Alexander Panchin: “Many thanks to the members of the jury and Dmitry Borisovich Zimin, who founded this award. It seems to me that she inspires so many people to write non-fiction books and do it well. My book would not have been written at all if not for my parents and teachers. And it would have been written, but it wouldn't have been nominated for an award if it hadn't been for the many people who helped me edit it. I am also very grateful to Asya Kazantseva. I once listened to her master class on how and why to write a popular science book. Her speech was very inspiring, after which I seriously thought that it was really appropriate. I listened and wrote. "

Laureate in the nomination "Humanitarian sciences" announced by the jury member Dmitry Bayuk... The award went to Sergey Kavtaradze per book “Anatomy of architecture. Seven books on logic, form and meaning. "

Dmitry Bayuk: “The short list this year is surprisingly good and varied. All four books are completely different from each other. All four are worth reading. It is extremely difficult to compare them. What should a real educator do? He should know a lot and be ready to talk about it popularly. I am extremely pleased when people write about the history of mathematics, when they have to write popularly and about things that are not very clear. Among these books was one that I was rooting for from the very beginning. And this is a book by Sergei Kavtaradze. "

Sergey Kavtaradze: “I am grateful to Dmitry Borisovich for me, for the fact that the award really works. The moment I was on the long list, I noticed that it was effective. A lot of people in different cities of our country follow this award and carefully familiarize themselves with all the books that have become its nominees. All books selected by the organizing committee are absolutely wonderful. Many thanks to the readers, because everything is done for them. They support this field that we all work for. "

Prize winners receive a monetary reward in the amount of 700 thousand rubles, the finalists receive 100 thousand rubles The publishers of the laureates' books receive a cash certificate of 130 thousand rubles.to promote books on the market. In addition, the books of the laureates and finalists of the award will be sent to 100 libraries of Russian regions... During the year, lectures will be held by nominees, finalists and prize winners in the regions and abroad, as well as online broadcasts for readers of regional libraries.

Special awards "Enlightener of Enlighteners"and a monetary reward in the amount 200 thousand rubleswas awarded Andrey Zorin, author of the book “The Appearance of a Hero. From the history of Russian emotional culture of the late 18th - early 19th centuries. " "This is a very important and significant nomination, because the work of educators is precisely to prepare other enlighteners, to create a space for the development of enlightenment, within which enlighteners meet with their listeners, who, perhaps, are also future enlighteners", - noted the hosts of the ceremony.

Roman Tymenchik: “The reason for the creation of this nomination was the appearance of the book“ The Appearance of a Hero ”in a long list. In the genre of nonfiction books, it is important to consider that, as in any good literature, the moment that modern aesthetics calls the pleasure of reading is very important. If we are talking about popular science literature, then there are two types of pleasure. One pleasure from the fact that you imagined the picture approximately in this way, maybe simply not finding the exact words for this, and the second is that you would never have thought so, as it is said in this book. So the book by Andrey Zorin is a synthesis of these two pleasures. Indeed, Andrei Leonidovich is an enlightener of enlighteners, a man thanks to whom a whole generation of Russian humanitarians have become entrenched in their prejudices and sympathies. "

Dmitry Zimin's special prize "Advisory voice" got Vladimir Reshetnikov, book author “Why is the sky dark. How the Universe Works ".

Dmitry Zimin: “Firstly, this year we can celebrate the tenth anniversary of the existence of the organizing committee, because it began its work a year before the start of the award. Honor and glory to our organizing committee, and especially to the co-chairs Alexander Arkhangelsky and Alexander Gavrilov! Secondly, every year we suffer because some great book is “overboard”. Therefore, this year, in honor of the 10th anniversary of the work of our organizing committee, I was instructed to turn my advisory vote into a decisive one and select for a special prize one book that claimed the prize, but did not become the winner. It is clear that such a prize should belong to the most ancient sciences. For example, astronomy. And then one day, one moonless dark night under the whisper of the stars literally told us the name of the author of the book. He teaches us, looking into emptiness, to know our past and future, to understand that this emptiness allows us to know that the Universe is finite in time and space. In general, looking into emptiness and seeing your future is a talent that is needed not only for an astronomer, but also for an ordinary person. "

This year, with the support of the media partner of the award - popular science edition N + 1 - a popular vote for the best book, which has already become traditional. For two weeks on the website of the publication were published excerpts from the books of the finalists of the award. After that in the public " VKontakte "" Obrazach " (372,500 subscribers) and on the website www.nplus1.ru for two days (November 14-15), a vote was held, in which 2547 people... The winner was Alexander Panchinper book "The Sum of Biotechnology".

The jury for the 2016 season included:

  • Roman Tymenchik, chairman of the jury, literary critic, professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem;
  • Dmitry Bayuk, historian of science, deputy editor-in-chief of the journal "Questions of the history of natural science and technology"
  • Evgeny Bunimovich, poet, mathematician, Ombudsman for the Rights of the Child in Moscow, Honored Teacher of Russia;
