Tales of the Fox Forest. Cynthia Paterson

Those who often look into the Labyrinth (well, there must still be maniacs like me! :) have probably seen an advertisement for a new series of books about rabbits. I saw it too :) And I was looking forward to the books going on sale, especially since two of them are winter, which means that the best time to read them is about to come. And so I received them!

The books turned out to be simply wonderful! The bobblehead just, unexpectedly, got into it (I already thought that it would forever remain only among my favorite books), so books reminiscent of the beloved Peter Rabbit turned out to be just right.

In addition, I have long been complaining that in our book market there are almost completely no transitional books between picture books and text books, and now the baby doll and I need these most of all. These books, they are exactly the same, “transitional” :) In them, on the one hand, there are many pictures of different sizes (from 1/4 page to a whole page), but at the same time the text is not limited to two sentences, it is also quite a lot, just like in the series from Genevieve Hurieux and Loïc Juannigo.

By the way, in terms of design, Brian and Cynthia Paterson’s books are also similar to “Rabbits...”: they are the same format (A4), the same thickness, hard cover, and also printed on offset. So I put them together on the shelf, they clearly like being neighbors :)

I really liked the stories of Brian and Cynthia Paterson: they are kind, sweet, a little magical. About friendship, about honor, mutual assistance....

IN "Adventures in the Fox Forest" it happens around Christmas. Little friends (a rabbit, a hedgehog and a mouse) decide to earn some money, because at Christmas, as always, there is not enough money. At first, things are not going very well for them, but then they come up with the idea of selling firewood, because everyone needs firewood in winter! But on the way out of the forest they meet a little badger who tells them about a carriage stuck nearby.

And the friends sacrifice their earnings to help the fox, who owned the carriage, get out of the snow. However, they don’t have to regret the lost firewood for a long time: the fox turns out to be not only rich, but kind and generous: he takes the kids to the city and gives them money to buy gifts. And he offers the baby badger, who lost his parents, to stay and live on his estate.

Do you agree, a wonderful Christmas and New Year story?

IN "The Fox Forest Abduction" Evil rats kidnap the little rabbit's uncle, they want him to tell them some important discovery he made. And his friends, of course, go to help him out of trouble. Having found a balloon that was in their uncle’s house, they fly on it to the rat’s castle, save their uncle and fly away. And the uncle shows them his secret: it’s a steam locomotive! A steam locomotive that once traveled through their city, and which was dragged away and broken by rats. And my uncle found it and fixed it. So the little heroes go on a beautiful sparkling locomotive to the city, where they are greeted by joyful residents.

The books are written in good Russian, are easy to read, and it is very interesting to follow the story.

And of course, the most important thing for which you should get these books is the illustrations! Brian Paterson's characters are reminiscent of those drawn by Beatrix Potter. They are so wonderfully drawn that it seems as if they are alive, as if they are about to jump off their pages and run somewhere! And how beautiful the winter forest is in his rendition! I just want to be in it, crunch the snow and pick up sprigs of holly.... The illustrations are light, beautiful, kind...

“Tales of the Fox Forest” is an amazing magical land.

In a certain kingdom, in a distant forest state, there is one very old forest village called Fox Forest. Various little animals live in that Forest and very often they find themselves in incredible adventures. If you ever managed to visit the Fox Forest, you would definitely come across the hedgehog Dronya, the rabbit Lapik, the mouse Chup and some other forest animals. And maybe you will even be lucky enough to be invited to sit around a big fire and listen to their amazing stories.

Each forest tale in the Tales of the Fox Forest series is filled with lots of colorful, cute illustrations by Brian Paterson. The text was written by his wife, Cynthia Paterson. When the artist began developing a series of drawings for a future children's book, he suggested that his wife try to write a story for it, using her childhood memories. Thus was born their first joint book, which readers liked so much that after that they released a whole series of children's books, “Tales of the Fox Forest.” Brian and Cynthia Paterson live in Oxfordshire, England with their three sons (who are probably grown up by now), from whom they get many ideas for their children's books.

In the English version of “Tales of the Fox Forest”, “Foxwood Treasure”, the fairy-tale characters have different names: Willie, Roo, Harvey, etc. I and many readers on the Internet expressed my opinion on this matter and I, also agreeing with them, decided to rename them names more convenient for the Russian reader.

I hope you, like many readers from different countries, will truly fall in love with our animals from the Fox Forest!

The cutest and funniest characters in the world live there - Willie the hedgehog, Harvey the mouse and Roo the rabbit. Every day in the Fox Forest is marked by Events with a capital letter. This wonderful land was invented by Brian and Cynthia Paterson. Their creator tells how the forest inhabitants were born.

Brian Paterson:
— Willie the Hedgehog and Mr. Gruffi the Badger came from images I drew while working as a postcard designer. My wife Cynthia came up with many of them when she started writing fairy tales. When the plot took shape, new characters joined the family of Fox Forest inhabitants: Jeremy the badger and Katie the rabbit.

— They say that when inventing book characters, authors often endow them with their own character traits; sometimes the creators and heroes even have an external resemblance. Which Fox Forest resident is similar to Brian Paterson?

— Of all the characters, I am most like Willie the Hedgehog, I’m not very tall, and I already have a belly, just like him. And my hair, when I was younger, always stuck out in different directions (like Willie's thorns).

— Now all over the world there is a rise in interest in books created in the 60–80s of the last century. Why do you think?

“I think the world these days has become a much less safe place to live.” Previous values: a measured pace of life, the desire to be closer to nature, the realization that happiness is not in money, but in empathy, kindness, and family - this is the essence of human existence. These, in my opinion, are some of the reasons why people look back and reminisce about times gone by.
Fox Forest is perhaps a sentimental version of a simpler life, and I suppose it is in some ways a reflection of my own childhood. Then the only problem was the fear of what our parents would say if we suddenly played too much and returned home too late, when it was already dark; or the fear that our parents might die; or if we did something wrong or got into trouble (for example, I often fell into a stream when going to school). But all this happened in an atmosphere of joy, we were sincere and wished well. In today's world, children seem to lose their naivety and carelessness too early. I would like to wish the Russian readers of the fairy tales of the Fox Forest the same thing that I wish all the inhabitants of the Earth - peace, joy and happiness.

Brian Paterson

Brian Paterson was born and raised near Ayr in Scotland, the birthplace of the famous poet Robert Burns. Brian fondly remembers childhood adventures and family picnics along the banks of the Afton River with its majestic scenery and raging torrents. In 1973, he and his wife Cynthia moved to London, where he worked as a designer for a computer magazine during the week... and a second career as a musician at the weekend. He eventually became a freelance artist, working in a variety of fields - as a fashion designer, as a creator of greeting card series, as well as a book illustrator, airbrush artist, retoucher... In the late 1970s, Brian began to develop his own style of work, creating watercolors, and in 1985, just a week before the birth of their first child, he and his wife began working as co-authors, publishing the first two books in the Tales of the Fox Forest series. Over the course of fifteen years, eight books were published in this series, as well as many things based on fairy tales (such as collectible porcelain, for example).
