    Historically, JIHT RAS was organized on the basis of the Institute of High Temperatures of the USSR Academy of Sciences (IVTAN). The predecessor of IVTAN was the Laboratory of High Temperatures of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (LVT AN), created at the Department of Engineering Thermophysics of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute. Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Vladimir Kirillin was appointed director of the laboratory by the decree of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences dated October 7, 1960, and his deputy, Dr. Sc. Alexander Sheindlin. On the basis of the LVT Academy of Sciences, by the order of the Council of Ministers of the USSR dated May 12, 1962, No. 1186, the Scientific Research Institute of High Temperatures (NII VT MPEI) was organized at the MEI.

    The Council of Ministers of the USSR by its Order. No. 349r of March 16, 1967 accepted the proposal of the USSR Academy of Sciences to transfer the Scientific Research Institute of VT MEI from the system of the USSR Ministry of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education to the jurisdiction of the USSR Academy of Sciences. AE Sheindlin, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, was appointed Director of IVTAN. From that moment, IVTAN appeared in the system of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

    Later, on the basis of IVTAN, the Scientific Association "IVTAN" was formed, and since 1994, by the decree of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences No. 178 dated October 12, 1993 "On renaming the Scientific Association" IVTAN "" it was transformed into the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences (director which by this time was the corresponding member of the RAS V.M.Batenin, and the honorary director - A.E.Sheindlin). By 2000, JIHT RAS (the chairman of the board of directors of which at that time was RAS Corresponding Member A.N. Lagarkov, who replaced Corresponding Member of RAS V.M.Batenin in this position) included the following organizations:

    • Institute of High Temperatures RAS (ICT RAS, IVTAN), which also includes the Branch of the ICT RAS in Makhachkala on the use of renewable energy sources and the Experimental Complex "New Energy Technologies" (EK NET), headed by Corresponding Member of the RAS VM Batenin;
    • Institute of Thermophysics of Extreme States, JIHT RAS (ITES JIHT RAS), headed by V. E. Fortov;
    • Institute of Theoretical and Applied Electrodynamics, JIHT RAS (ITPE JIHT RAS), headed by Corr. RAS A. N. Lagarkov;
    • The Scientific and Technological Center for Energy Saving Processes and Installations (STC EPU JIHT RAS), including the Shatura branch of the ICT RAS (a branch of the STC EPU JIHT RAS), headed by R.R.Grigoryants;
    • Scientific station in Bishkek, headed by D.Sc. V. A. Zeigarnik;
    • Engineering and operational complex JIHT RAS (IEK JIHT RAS).

    In 2007, as a result of reorganization, all organizations that previously existed within the framework of the JIHT RAS were merged into a single legal entity (with the exception of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Electrodynamics, which received the status of an independent institute in the RAS system).

    The establishment of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences, dates back to 1960 - the year of the creation of the High Temperature Laboratory of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Over the past 50 years, the Institute has turned from a small scientific laboratory at the MPEI into the largest institution of the Department of Power Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics and Control Processes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the country's leading scientific center in the field of energy and thermal physics of extreme states.

    The main activities of the Institute are:

    Solving the problems of creating an effective, safe, reliable and environmentally friendly modern energy, including nuclear, hydrogen, aviation, space and cryogenic;
    - studies of thermophysical, electrophysical, optical and dynamic properties of substances and low-temperature plasma in a wide range of parameters, including extreme ones;
    - research of heat and mass transfer processes, physical gas and plasma dynamics, transformation of energy types with variable properties of working bodies and high density of energy flows;
    - research in the field of thermophysics of intense pulsed effects on matter, materials and structures; development of methods and creation of means for generating high energy densities;
    - research in the field of energy saving and energy efficient technologies, chemical energy, increasing the efficiency of using natural fuels and raw materials, using renewable energy sources.

    Since January 2007, the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been headed by Academician V.E. He is a well-known and actively working scientist in the field of energy, thermal physics, strong shock and detonation waves, plasma physics and physical mechanics. Scientific research V.E. Fortov are of fundamental importance for the development of pulsed and industrial power engineering, space physics, controlled thermonuclear fusion, rocketry, and a number of special applications.

    In 2008-2009, scientists from the JIHT RAS, as part of the RAS working group, made a forecast for the development of energy for the period up to 2030, energy consumption in Russia and the commissioning of capacities (together with the Institute for Energy Problems of the RAS, ERI RAS, ISEM SB RAS) Also, the "Consolidated plan (" road map ") of the innovative development of the fuel and energy complex and the transition to clean energy of the future was developed.

    Under the scientific supervision of the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences at TPP-28 (now TPP-21), Mosenergo jointly with the Moscow machine-building production enterprise Salyut created and put into operation in 2009 a 60 MW power unit based on a conversion aircraft engine with steam injection combustion chamber.

    Scientists of the Institute have developed an original environmentally friendly technology of complex energy-chemical use of natural gas with the simultaneous production of electricity and synthetic liquid fuel.

    The JIHT RAS is actively studying the thermodynamic, transport and optical properties of real substances under intense pulsed influences (in shock compression waves and adiabatic unloading, under the action of intense ultrashort laser pulses, when conductors are heated by powerful current pulses, etc.).

    On the basis of the Institute, there are collective use centers:
    - A terawatt femtosecond laser complex, which is used for experimental studies of extreme states formed in nanolayers of materials under the action of powerful femtosecond laser pulses.

    The Moscow Regional Explosive Center was created on the basis of a spherical explosion chamber, which has no analogues in the country.

    In recent years, a new field of physics has been formed at the JIHT RAS - the physics of dusty plasma. Today's interest in dusty plasmas is associated with the processes of self-organization and the formation of ordered structures, the so-called dusty plasma crystals. A special place is occupied by pioneering work on the study of dusty plasma in microgravity, carried out on board the International Space Station. The Institute carries out work on plasma medicine, and develops methods for generating plasma for disinfection and treatment of extensive infected wounds.

    At JIHT RAS, research is being carried out to develop new hydrogen technologies for power engineering. Hydrogen-oxygen steam generators have been developed, which are efficient hydrogen combustion devices for producing water vapor with high parameters. Power plants are being created to supply power to autonomous consumers on the basis of energy technology complexes using the reaction of hydrothermal oxidation of aluminum.
