What level of English is needed for flight attendants. Preparing for an interview at Aeroflot, how to get an interview at Aeroflot

A flight attendant is a profession in which it is almost impossible to do without knowledge of the English language, especially if you dream of flying on prestigious international flights. In this article, we've prepared a basic phrasebook to get you started in learning English for flight attendants. You will learn how to greet passengers and resolve conflicts, as well as learn the basic words in English that every crew member needs to know.

Basic concepts

Let's start with the crew of the airship. The team, depending on the type of vessel, may consist of the captain of the aircraft (captain), the second pilot (co-pilot / first officer), flight mechanic (air mechanic / flight engineer), navigator (flight navigator), senior flight attendant (cabin service director / flight director) ) and flight attendants (flight attendant / steward). Chief purser or purser also refers to a senior flight attendant, usually on smaller flights.

There are various passengers on board. Flight attendants usually refer to all of them as PAX. PAX is an abbreviation for Passengers Allowed in Expenses, which means the number of passengers who have purchased tickets for the flight. Among PAX there are categories of people whose names you need to know in English:

  • a VIP (very important person) - very important person;
  • a CIP (commercially important person) - influential passenger in first or business class;
  • a UM (unaccompanied minors) - children who travel without adults;
  • a handicapped passenger - a passenger with a disability;
  • a standby - a passenger who redeems an unredeemed ticket right before the flight.

There are several classes of passenger service. Flight attendants definitely need to know these names:

  • first class - first class, not available on all aircraft;
  • business class - business class, an alternative to the first class;
  • economy class (tourist class) - economy class (tourist class), the most affordable type of service.

It will also be useful to find out what types of flights are available. In English they are called like this:

  • Nonstop (non-stop) flight - non-stop flight. It is the most convenient, since the plane flies to the point of arrival without landing at other airports and passengers do not need to make a transfer.
  • Direct flight - direct flight. The plane makes stops to “pick up” passengers at other airports.
  • Connecting flight - flight with transfers. Passengers will need to transfer from one flight to another.
  • Scheduled flight - regular flight.
  • Non-scheduled flight - non-scheduled flight.

In an airplane, passenger seats can also be classified. In English it will be called like this:

  • window seats - window seats;
  • aisle / aɪl / seats - seats next to the aisle;
  • exit rows - rows of seats that are located near emergency exits. Usually, they try to give these seats to physically strong and healthy passengers who, in the event of an unforeseen situation, can open the exit and help people to evacuate.
  • bulkhead seats - seats next to the bulkhead between passenger classes. Typically, these seats have more legroom, so it is desirable to occupy them tall passengers.
  • standard seats - standard seats.

We've also compiled a mini-English dictionary for the flight attendant, please study it before learning phrases to communicate with passengers.

    In conclusion, I would like to talk a little more about work of a stewardess... No matter how charming the opportunity to walk in beautiful uniforms, to be in the center of passengers' attention throughout the flight, to see many countries with their own eyes, this profession has its negative sides.

    First of all, stewardess must always be ready for the next flight: this means that they can call and call to work at any time of the day. Therefore, warn your loved ones in advance. You will have to be away from home for a month, since you have constant flights, so your family members and loved ones will need endurance and patience. Be mentally prepared for the fact that your personal life will fade into the background. The work of a flight attendant is an occupation for free-spirited people who are not burdened with obligations.

    Secondly, passengers are very different and they do not always behave appropriately. You must learn to always maintain composure and composure, because this is your job. A subtle sense of humor and extreme tolerance for all types of people are qualities that everyone needs stewardess... If you are easily offended, quickly get tired of communicating with people, or easily get annoyed, then this job is perhaps not for you.

    Take a break from the good side of this profession and take a look at flight attendant job on the other hand. Being a flight attendant is hard work that requires a lot of emotional and physical effort. The job isn't just about pointing the direction to the emergency exit and handing out mints on takeoff and landing. The stewardess is on her feet most of the flight time and performs her duties under unnatural conditions. Despite stress and fatigue, the flight attendant should behave politely with all passengers, even those who are demonstrative, rude or arrogant.

    The opportunity to see different countries is one of the common reasons why most girls dream become stewardesses... Long-distance flights, new countries, new meetings. However, this is precisely what can cause disappointment, since it often happens that, having arrived in another country, the crew does not have the opportunity to leave the airport.

I am studying on board as a guide, I will work at Aeroflot, so, of course, English is very important for me. Considering that at school he was taught so-so, and even less at the university, my level of proficiency is appropriate. To somehow remedy this situation, I decided to sign up to try classes with a teacher on Skype. For me, this is quite convenient, since I can study in the evening, after basic training. I tried both private tutors and several schools, and chose Lingua Airlines. First of all, of course, because of the professionalism of Irina (the teacher with whom I study), but an important factor in the choice was the interaction with the managers of the company. They work very clearly, promptly resolve any issues and always try to make the client satisfied. We agree to the schedule of classes for 2 weeks in advance, so that there are no overlaps. I am delighted with Irina, as she understands what exactly I need - from general gaps in knowledge to the intricacies of the aviation industry. We devote a lot of time to practice, since I have problems with this, and passengers, even on domestic flights, sometimes do not speak Russian. After a few sessions I realized that I can already communicate more freely, now it will not be so scary to take exams. I will study more, as I understand that I need it. Thank you Lingua Airlines!

I have been working as a flight attendant for 7 years. All this time, I only had flights within the country, and I only had enough knowledge of English to work. Not so long ago there was an opportunity to switch to international flights, but on the condition that I improve my English as soon as possible. I immediately began to look for courses in the study of the English language, which would quickly and most importantly teach me well. I stumbled upon the Lingua Airlines school by accident, especially attracted by the fact that there is a separate course for flight attendants with the possibility of flexible working hours. Although, as I now understand, it is possible to study English on Skype anywhere, except that except for the time in the sky J. The classes are interesting, I like Svetlana's approach, and most importantly, my goal has been achieved, I now work on international flights and do not worry about your English! Not to mention a good pay raise!
